"The Alto Knights", starring Robert De Niro as two rival gangsters, is a pastiche of classic mafia films like those of Scorsese and Coppola. While De Niro plays both Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, the performances are uneven, with Genovese bordering on caricature. The film is a less successful effort compared to earlier work by both the director, Barry Levinson, and the screenwriter, Nicholas Pileggi.
